Füzérkomlós – last station of the narrow gauge railway

Füzérkomlós stretches along the Török stream; the village acquired its name from the hops which was cultivated here in the 16th century to supply the Füzér Castle‘s brewery. The large number of stone tools unearthed in the village area confirm that major human settlement was here in the Stone Age. The prefix “Füzér” denotes the former manorial estate. Only three families lived in the settlement in the 18th century, so the Karolyi family tried to save the village by settling here. The local people used to log, farm and work in a quarry for a living. When the narrow guage railway traveled between Füzérkomlós and Sátoraljaújhely, the settlement played a significant role in the people's lives in the Hegyköz-region, additionaly because the region's first post office was established there as well. It was also famous for its spa, which was indicated on the map by the 1st Military Survey (1780) as “Bad von Komlós” (Spa in Komlós). The village is now the center of the region’s hunting tourism.
